Wanting to convert SOL to BTC is a common move: you hold Solana from trading, staking or an airdrop, and you want part of it in bitcoin. This guide explains why people make this swap, what to prepare, the exact steps on ThinSwap and how long it takes for the bitcoin to reach your wallet.

Why people swap SOL for BTC

Reasons vary, and none of them is a recommendation. Some people want to lock in gains made on Solana and hold them in the asset they view as a long-term store of value. Others want to rebalance a portfolio that has drifted heavily towards one coin. Some need BTC for a specific payment, or prefer keeping savings on a hardware wallet with a Bitcoin-only setup. Whatever your reason, the mechanics are the same.

What to prepare

A Bitcoin address you control

ThinSwap accepts all common BTC address formats:

Starts withTypeNote
bc1qNative SegWitMost common in modern wallets
bc1pTaprootNewer format, supported
3Nested SegWit (P2SH)Still widely used
1LegacyOlder wallets, works fine

Do not paste a Solana address or an address for wrapped bitcoin on another chain. The BTC is sent on the Bitcoin network only.

Some SOL left over for fees

Solana transaction fees are tiny, but they are paid in SOL. If you send your entire balance, some wallets will refuse, and others may leave the account unable to move tokens later. A prudent habit is to keep a little SOL in the wallet after the swap, so you can still pay fees for future transfers.

An amount within the limits

Each order must be at least 20 USD and at most 1,000,000 USD, both expressed as the equivalent in SOL.

The steps on ThinSwap

  1. Open the SOL to BTC pair.
  2. Enter how much SOL you want to send. The quote shows the BTC you will receive after the 0.4% service fee and the Bitcoin network fee for sending you the coins.
  3. Paste your BTC address. Optionally add a SOL refund address and an email or Telegram contact for updates.
  4. Create the order. You receive a Solana deposit address and an exact SOL amount. The rate is fixed for 30 minutes.
  5. Send exactly that amount, decimals included, on the Solana network. The decimals identify your order. If you are withdrawing from an exchange that takes a fee, add it so the full amount arrives.
  6. Keep the order ID and watch the order page: Deposit, Confirming, Sending, Completed.

No account is needed at any stage.

How long it takes

This pair is a good example of two very different blockchains working together. Solana is extremely fast: slots are around 400 milliseconds, and a transaction typically reaches the "finalized" commitment level in roughly 13 seconds. ThinSwap detects your SOL deposit once it is included in a block, so the deposit side is usually done almost immediately.

The outgoing side is Bitcoin. Once we broadcast your BTC, it shows in the mempool right away, but your wallet may wait for one or more block confirmations before calling it final. Bitcoin blocks average about 10 minutes. In total, the swap usually takes 5–30 minutes. Our outgoing transaction hash is shown on the order page, so you can follow it on mempool.space.

What if something goes wrong?

  • You sent but the order does not show it. Copy your transaction signature from your Solana wallet and paste it on the order page as the TXID.
  • You sent after the 30-minute window. The team reviews it manually and either sends at the current rate or refunds.
  • You sent a different amount. Contact support with your order ID. Exact amounts are what make automatic matching work, so avoid rounding.
  • Wrong BTC address. Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed, and funds go to the address you provide. Check the first and last characters before creating the order.

If you would rather hold a stable value than bitcoin, the SOL to USDT pair converts to a dollar-pegged stablecoin. To go back into Solana later, use BTC to SOL. You can find more context about each coin on the swap SOL and swap BTC pages.

Quick checklist

  • BTC address copied from your own wallet and double-checked.
  • A little SOL kept back for future fees.
  • Exact deposit amount sent on Solana, within 30 minutes.
  • Order ID saved until the status reads Completed.
  • Our outgoing hash checked on mempool.space if you want to follow the confirmations yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send my whole SOL balance?

It is better not to. Solana fees are paid in SOL, so keeping a small amount in your wallet lets you make future transfers without topping up first.

Which Bitcoin address format should I use?

Any of them works: bc1q, bc1p, 3 or 1. Use whatever your own wallet gives you, and make sure it is a Bitcoin address, not a Solana one.

Why is the Solana deposit fast but the BTC slower?

Solana confirms in seconds, while Bitcoin blocks average around 10 minutes. Your wallet may wait for a block confirmation before showing the BTC as final.
