If you hold TRON and want a steadier balance, you may want to convert TRX to USDT. Both live on the same blockchain, use the same wallet and the same address, which makes this one of the simplest swaps there is. This guide explains the difference between the two, why keeping some TRX matters, and how to do the swap on ThinSwap.
TRX and USDT TRC20: same network, different jobs
TRX is the native coin of the TRON blockchain. Its price moves with the market, and it is what the network uses to pay for transactions. USDT TRC20 is Tether’s dollar stablecoin issued as a token on TRON. It aims to stay at 1 USD, and it is widely used for transfers between exchanges and wallets.
| TRX | USDT (TRC20) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Native coin of TRON | Token issued by Tether on TRON |
| Price | Moves with the market | Targets 1 USD |
| Used for fees | Yes | No |
| Address | Starts with T | Same T address |
If the token standard is new to you, the what is TRC20 guide explains it in plain terms.
Why people convert TRX to USDT
The usual reason is stability. A TRX balance can gain or lose value quickly, while USDT is designed to track the dollar. People also convert before paying someone who expects USDT, or before sending funds to an exchange where USDT is the main trading currency. Keep in mind that a stablecoin is not risk-free: it depends on its issuer, and issuers can freeze addresses.
Keep some TRX for energy and bandwidth
This is the point many people miss. On TRON, every transaction consumes bandwidth, and smart-contract transfers such as USDT also consume energy. If your account does not have enough of either, the network burns TRX to cover the cost. A USDT transfer can need noticeably more resources than a plain TRX transfer.
So if you convert your entire TRX balance to USDT, you may end up with USDT you cannot move until you add TRX again. A sensible approach is to swap most of it and keep a small TRX reserve in the same wallet for later USDT transfers.
Step-by-step on ThinSwap
- Open the TRX to USDT pair.
- Enter the TRX amount. It must be between 20 USD and 1,000,000 USD in TRX equivalent. The quote shows the USDT you get after the 0.4% service fee and the network fee for sending you USDT.
- Paste your receiving address. For USDT TRC20 it starts with
T, and it is the same address as your TRX wallet. Optionally add a refund address and an email or Telegram contact. - Create the order. You get a TRON deposit address and an exact TRX amount. The rate is fixed for 30 minutes.
- Send exactly that amount, every decimal included. If your exchange deducts a withdrawal fee, add it so the exact amount arrives.
- Keep the order ID and follow the statuses: Deposit, Confirming, Sending, Completed.
No account or registration is required. If this is your first time, consider starting with a smaller amount above the minimum to get comfortable with the flow.
Which USDT network you receive
By default, the TRX to USDT pair delivers USDT on TRC20, which fits naturally since you are already on TRON. If you would rather receive USDT on Ethereum, there is a separate TRX to USDT ERC20 pair. In that case your receiving address must be an Ethereum 0x address, not a T address. Always match the address to the network shown in the order.
How long it takes
TRON is fast. Blocks come about every 3 seconds, and a block is considered solidified after 19 confirmations, roughly one minute. ThinSwap detects your TRX deposit once it is included in a block, so the whole swap usually takes 5–30 minutes, often towards the short end. Our outgoing transaction hash appears on the order page, and you can look it up on tronscan.org.
Things to double-check
- The address starts with T for TRC20, or 0x if you chose the ERC20 pair.
- You sent the exact amount within 30 minutes. If the rate expired after you sent, the team reviews it manually and either sends at the current rate or refunds.
- If the order does not show your deposit, paste your TXID on the order page.
- Blockchain transfers cannot be reversed, so a wrong address cannot be corrected later.
Going back, and other options

Frequently asked questions
Is my USDT TRC20 address different from my TRX address?
No. On TRON, TRX and USDT TRC20 share the same address, which starts with T. Your wallet simply shows the token as a separate balance.
Why should I keep some TRX after converting?
Sending USDT on TRON uses energy and bandwidth, and if you have none, the network burns TRX to pay for it. Without TRX you may not be able to move your USDT.
Can I receive USDT on Ethereum instead of TRON?
Yes, use the TRX to USDT ERC20 pair and provide an Ethereum address starting with 0x. Make sure the address matches the network shown in the order.
